Where to stay in Gallipoli, Puglia
It's worth the drive to get to the enchanting town of Gallipoli, in the southern tip of Puglia - and you can combine a visit here with a stroll around Lecce, or by going all the way to Santa Maria di Leuca if you're feeling ambitious (which is supposed to be one of the best beaches in Puglia). Galatina is also a pretty place to stop off at, to combine a trip down to Gallipoli (which is not to be confused with its namesake in Turkey, of course!)
Gallipoli today is split into two very distinct parts, the new and the old towns. The new town is situated on the "mainland". The old town is primarily located on an "island". Surrounded by the sea, it's connected to the mainland by a bridge built in the 16th - 17th Century, reputed to be the oldest bridge in Italy.
The old town has massive character plus lots of points of interest packed into a very small area. It does get really busy in Gallipoli, as it's one of Italy's main summer holiday and tourist destinations - so get there early, or late!
A couple of our favourite things to do in Gallipoli include going down to the harbour and eating fresh giant red prawns with a little glass of white wine - and then grabbing a drink in one of the bars that overlook the sea.
