Where to stay in Matera, Basilicata
Matera shouldn't technically be included on a Puglia holiday website, because it's in the neighbouring region of Basilicata. But it's such a short drive across the border from Puglia that it's very much worthy of being here.
You may recognise Matera, if you're a James Bond fan - No Time To Die was partially filmed here. It's a Unesco World Heritage site, and a visit here will make you feel like you've been transported back in time.
When you visit Matera, try and stay for at least a couple of nights, three is perfect. There is a decent amount to explore - including the caves - and you don't want to feel rushed. You'll want to stay somewhere ideally which has views over Matera's old town, as it's really just stunning in the evenings. And even in the shoulder months, you'll need to book a table for dinner, as it does get busy.
